Shared Safety Intelligence for UK HEMS

Hospital helicopter landing sites are essential to emergency critical care. But uncertainty about who owns the risk environment surrounding them is putting their continued availability in doubt.

No single organisation has the complete safety picture for any given site. The environment is dynamic, the data is siloed, and there has been no way to appropriately divide and share responsibility for it. Without that, there is no way to effectively share the risk.

HeliGuardian enables the organisations involved in UK emergency aviation to share accurate safety data for the same landing sites without surrendering operational independence or decision-making authority.

What We're Building

HeliGuardian's architecture enables each organisation to maintain their own operational picture while sharing a common baseline of factual data.

Coordinated, Not Centralised

HeliGuardian provides a common baseline of factual data: site dimensions; survey results; known hazards; environmental conditions, onto which each organisation layers their own assessments and approvals. No one surrenders decision-making authority.

Your Data, Your View

Different stakeholders own and are responsible for different data types. HeliGuardian accommodates this complexity with clear ownership boundaries and governance at every level, so that accurate data flows to the right people at the right time.

Fully Auditable

Every action in HeliGuardian records who performed it, in what capacity, for which organisation, and when. Records are immutable and retention exceeds CAA requirements.

Built to Integrate

HeliGuardian is designed to export data to EFB applications, including those used specifically across UK HEMS operators. Operational data from HeliGuardian will reach crews through existing workflows.

The Team Building HeliGuardian

HeliGuardian is led by someone who's lived the problem, supported by a small team with experience that spans emergency aviation and enterprise technology delivery.

Rudi Lorenz

Founder

Rudi is a helicopter pilot with a 24-year career in the Royal Navy. He has brought together a team focused specifically on HEMS and Search and Rescue operations, the environments where helipad safety matters most.

Rudi led the introduction of uncrewed air systems to Royal Navy warships, building safety cases from scratch and coordinating across military and civilian organisations where operational data was fragmented and accountability for safety-critical information was unclear.

Since leaving the Navy, Rudi has worked helping large public and private sector organisations turn fragmented operational data into shared intelligence. HeliGuardian applies this experience directly to the HEMS environment.

The Wider Team

HeliGuardian's technical lead has over two decades of software engineering experience spanning government, data intelligence, and AI, including senior architecture roles at the UK National Audit Office, and has co-founded and scaled multiple technology companies.

HeliGuardian is supported by a network of advisors drawn from roles that span all of the stakeholder agencies involved in delivering UK emergency aviation. This includes HEMS and SAR pilots, technical crew, clinicians, NHS Ambulance Service Trusts, and Air Ambulance charities. What unites them is a shared conviction that the problems around hospital helipad safety are solvable, and that solving them means lives saved.
